Quill Recognition Awards

The Canadian Community Newspapers Association (CCNA) recognizes individuals for long-standing service to the newspaper industry and those who have made a distinguished contribution to the association. See below for details about each award and the nomination process.

Gold Quill Award: 50 years

The Gold Quill Award recognizes service of 50 years or more. It is presented to any individual who has been actively engaged in the newspaper industry or an individual who in the view of the nominating regional affiliated association has a made a substantial contribution to the newspaper industry. The purpose of this honour is to pay tribute to those who have served Canada’s newspaper industry regardless of position or title for a minimum 50 years.

Silver Quill Award: 25 years

The Silver Quill Award recognizes service of 25 years or more. It is presented to any individual who has been actively engaged in the newspaper industry, or an individual who in the view of the nominating regional affiliated association has made a substantial contribution to the newspaper industry. The purpose of this honour is to pay tribute to those who have served Canada’s newspaper industry regardless of position or title for a minimum 25 years.

Bronze Quill Award: Distinguished service

Publishers of member newspapers may recognize long-standing and distinguished service of staff members who do not qualify for Gold or Silver Quills by presenting them with a Bronze Quill award. Bronze Quill certificates may be requested directly from Newspapers Canada and do not require board approval.

Quill Award Nomination Process

Nominations for Gold Quills and Silver Quills must be submitted to a regional association for review prior to being forwarded to the CCNA board of directors for consideration. Silver Quill certificates and Gold Quill plaques are presented at regional conventions or the CCNA annual meeting.

Nominations for Bronze Quills are submitted to the CCNA office and do not require approval by the CCNA board of directors. Nomination forms may be obtained from the Newspapers Canada office or downloaded from this page. Bronze Quills are presented at functions of the publisher's choosing.

The President's Gold Quill is presented to the outgoing CCNA President at the completion of his or her term in recognition of their commitment to the community newspaper industry and their dedicated service as president of the association. The presentation is made at the CCNA annual meeting or other similar event.

Similarly the President's Quill is presented to outgoing CCNA directors who have served a minimum of two years' service on the CCNA board. The presentation is made at a regional convention or CCNA annual meeting.

Honorary Life Membership

Honorary Life Membership may be awarded by the CCNA board of directors to General Members who have performed meritorious services beyond the normal and regular duties of membership in and on behalf of the Association, and to friends of the Association who, over a period of years, have contributed their support and understanding toward the improvement of community journalism in Canada. Nominations for Honorary Life Membership may be submitted by any General Member, Affiliated Member or Participating Member.

Nominations must be made in writing, outlining the nominee’s qualifications and biography. If possible, a photograph of the nominee should accompany the nomination.

Nominations forwarded to the national office before December 31 of any year will be considered by the board of directors at its first meeting for approval. If an Honorary Life Membership has been or is granted in respect of a newspaper published by such an individual, the Honorary Life Membership granted as aforesaid shall not relieve against the payment of fees for the membership in respect of such newspaper. Presentation of Honorary Life Memberships will be made at the annual meeting. Honorary Life Members shall enjoy the same rights and privileges as General Members.
